Title: Simulating Civil Security Activities

Abstract: When conducting civil security a military force must pay particular attention to minimizing harm to civilians while meet mission objectives which can be facilitated by the incorporation of nonlethal weapons into the force continuum. However, civilians may respond in unexpected ways to different uses of force, potentially resulting in unintended escalation of a potentially hostile situation. To address this challenge, we have developed the WRENCH agent-based simulation model that represents a security force carrying out civil security activities, addressing any emerging civilian threats. WRENCH models realistic psychological and social complexities of civilian individuals and groups that drive crowd behaviors and their responses to the use of force. The simulation model enables the exploration of the effects of different security force decisions on various outcome metrics of interest. This talk will provide an overview of the WRENCH simulation model, describe an experiment and results analysis that gives a window into the types of insights WRENCH can provide for better managing civil security situations, and discuss the related work currently underway.
