Expertise: Southeast Asia, Indonesia, International Relations, Comparative Politics

 

Dr. Michael S. Malley is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of National Security Affairs at the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø, which he joined in 2004. An expert in Southeast Asia and the Indo-Pacific security, he teaches courses in the fields of comparative politics, international relations, and maritime security. His current research examines the response of U.S. allies and partners to China’s economic, diplomatic, and military power, especially in the maritime domain. His work has appeared in journals such as Asian Survey, Democratization, Nonproliferation Review, and Washington Quarterly, as well as a variety of edited volumes.

He has served as principal investigator for studies and strategic dialogues for sponsors such as the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, Defense Security Cooperation Agency, Joint Warfare Analysis Center, Department of State, and Air Force Education and Training Command. From 2012 to 2017, he served as executive director of the Project on Advanced Systems and Concepts for Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction.

Before joining NPS, he taught in the political science department and Contemporary History Institute at Ohio University, where he also served as assistant director of Southeast Asian studies. He earned a Ph.D. in political science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, an M.A. in Southeast Asian Studies from Cornell University, and a B.S. from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service. He also studied at the National University of Singapore and Indonesia’s Gadjah Mada University.
