Mechanical Testers

NPS sports instruments that measures tensile, flextural, and compressive strength. In addition, a fatigue tester and a suite of advanced mechanical testers are availalbe to faculty and students. Testers include Instron 4507 and 5982 universal testers. The later including test fixtures for both square and round tensile specimens, four-point flexural testing, and compression testing at 100 kN maximum load. The Satec Unidrive system is used primarily for compression testing with loads up to 500 kN. A MTS 858 fatigue tester is available for fatigue testing of 5 or 25 kN and used for plastics, polymer-matrix composites, and aluminum. Our labs also sport Charpy Impact testers for fracture toughness measurements and other mechanical testers.

Tribometer

Responsive Image
Our lab hosts a standard modular pin-on-disk tribometer (Nanovea T50) used for wear testing materials. The T50 comes with modules for high temperature wear testing, up to 800 °C. Other modules include a tribo-corrosion cell for wear testing samples under oxidizing or reducing conditions; a module for performing wear tests in a humid enviornment (or in an inert atmosphere); and a module for testing samples in a fluid. The tribometer is a versatile materials tester.
