Sponsor Program

Sponsor Program

Every international student attending graduate programs at the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø (NPS) is assigned a sponsor, an American peer who acts as a guide, cultural ambassador, and friend. The goal of IGPO's sponsor program is to make international students feel welcome and acquaint them with American culture and society.

Each quarter, IGPO recruits and matches American volunteers to sponsor the new international students. To the maximum extent possible, sponsors are matched by curriculum for academic networking, but preferences for a specific country, language, or region of interest are also considered.

This is more than a volunteer program; it’s an opportunity to build lasting friendships, gain a global perspective, and make a difference in someone’s life. Join us in fostering international camaraderie — become a sponsor today!

How can I be a supportive sponsor?

  1. Be Accessible and Available

    • Make regular check-ins a priority, especially during the international student's initial weeks. Let them know you're there to answer questions or assist whenever needed.
    • Provide clear communication channels, such as your phone number or email.
  2. Facilitate Practical Settling-In

    • Offer help with finding housing, navigating utilities (e.g., internet setup, mobile phones), and understanding necessary administrative tasks (e.g., driver's licenses, car registration).
    • Provide guidance on accessing groceries, childcare options, and NPS apps/tools like Sakai, Python, and Teams.
  3. Foster Social and Cultural Integration

    • Invite students to family gatherings, cultural events (e.g., Thanksgiving, BBQs, holiday celebrations), and community activities (e.g., wine clubs, sports events, hiking trips).
    • Encourage exploration of local attractions, such as the Monterey Bay Aquarium or farmers' markets, and share tips about food, customs, and traditions.
    • Share insights into local customs like tipping culture, American football, or unique dining practices (e.g., dipping fries in ice cream!).
  4. Build a Genuine Connection

    • Spend time with students one-on-one through dinners, coffee meetings, outings, or recreational activities like cycling, video games, or karaoke.
    • Create opportunities for friendship and mutual understanding, treating them like part of your family whenever possible.
  5. Provide Academic Mentorship

    • Help students navigate academic life at the ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø (NPS) by offering advice on course selections, curricula, professors, and thesis work if applicable.

  6. Be Warm and Welcoming

    • Show kindness, empathy, and generosity to ease the emotional challenges of relocating. Simple gestures, such as offering a meal or small gifts, can make a big difference.
    • Help them feel connected and supported, creating a sense of belonging.
